In this lab we believe…

Science thrives in a healthy and supported mind.

We strive to foster a “people first” environment for learning and thinking. We prioritize work/life balance and support mental health efforts. We agree to uphold an environment where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, and is supported as an equal team member. Our lab is a space free from verbal, emotional, or physical harm. Abuse has no place in our group, nor in science.

Science thrives in a diverse environment.

Diverse brains provide diverse perspectives. Each individual’s lived experience is something to be cherished, and is seen as a key strength for our team. A diverse team is well suited for tackling unique scientific hypotheses and problem solving. We encourage a diverse environment not only because it is right, but because diversity makes us strong.

Science thrives in an inclusive environment.

As a team, we strive to pursue challenging lines of inquiry in science: uncovering biophysical relationships between macromolecular composition and cellular function. These questions are certainly hard ones. We believe that strongest predictor for success in our environment is in the degree of passion, or fascination, for biophysics. As such, we seek to include all in our lab who are as excited about proteins as we are! Further, we pledge to uphold an environment where everyone is not only welcomed, but treated with respect and dignity, and their identities are validated and accepted. We will all support each other, and make sure all are actively included. Science is hard, no need to make it harder.

Science thrives in an equitable environment.

We believe in fair science, and we recognize that different folks may have different needs for success in our lab. We will maintain open dialogue to ensure the means for success are afforded to everyone. We will also strive towards maintaining equitable publication and presentation materials — e.g. use of colorblind friendly graphics, dyslexia friendly fonts — so that as many readers can enjoy our work as possible.

In this lab, our science is…

Done with integrity.

Reproducible.

Shared openly.
